Reasons to Choose Epoxy Flooring over Painted Concrete for Your Business Premises

Hello, my name is Malcolm and I have just purchased a new home in Melbourne, Australia. My wife and I are really pleased with our new place, but we also understand that it needs a bit of work before it will be just as we want it to be. One area which is causing me problems is the paving on the front driveway. This paving has become cracked and uneven, making it quite unsafe as someone could easily trip and fall. I didn't know what to do, so I called in my brother Jack. He is very good at DIY and was able to offer me lots of tips and advice. Eventually, I decided to have the paving replaced.

If you have a concrete floor in your café or shop and are looking at different flooring possibilities, you might have seen painted concrete and epoxy flooring and wondered which would be better. Here are some reasons to go with epoxy flooring.

More Durable and Resilient

Epoxy flooring is more durable and resilient than paint. While a floor paint that suits concrete may contain some epoxy content, it is still paint. If you paint your café or restaurant floor, the colour will eventually chip and flake. The floor could wear out quite quickly if it carries a lot of daily traffic.

Epoxy flooring is entirely different. It's created from a mixture of two elements, an epoxy resin and a hardener. This blend is applied to the floor, where it chemically reacts and fuses with the concrete. Over about a day, the mixture will change from a thick liquid to a hard plastic cover.

This surface is much harder than paint, and it resists chipping and flaking. Epoxy floors are extremely tough and can withstand foot traffic, chemical spills, and vehicles driving over them. Your installer will choose the right epoxy mix for the level of wear the floor will receive. The epoxy mixture is thicker than a paint layer as well.

Extra Decorative Options

Epoxy flooring also provides many more decorative options than painting does. The base epoxy mix can be pigmented in various colours, just like paint can. However, you have other cosmetic options for epoxy flooring, as different elements can be applied to mixture.

The contractors can apply coloured flakes that give the floor a textured, patterned look. You can choose from blends, such as brown, grey, and charcoal, which can be applied to a white epoxy base. Alternatively, opt for a dark base colour and add pale-toned flakes.

The flakes come in different sizes, from granular to chunky. The finer flakes can give a salt-and-pepper look that is more subtle, while the bigger chips look bolder. If you want a minimal look, the contractors can add the flakes sparsely to reveal a greater area of the uniform base colour.

Other elements, such as metallic powders, can be added to Commercial Epoxy Flooring. A skilled contractor can also finish the floor to mimic marble or other substances. A painted floor, on the other hand, doesn't offer this variety of designs and patterns.
